About Us

The Plantersville Cultural Center, home to The Village Group, preserves and promotes the history of the African American contribution to the rice culture and environmental/recreational opportunities of the area. Gullah culture includes storytelling, cuisine, music, folk beliefs, crafts, farming, and fishing traditions, as well as its own dialect exhibiting strong influence from West and Central African cultures.

The Village Group is a 17-year-strong 501c3 nonprofit honored by South Carolina’s Secretary of State for devoting 98.9% of its income to programs for hundreds of underserved and primarily African American youth annually in rural Georgetown County. Programs and offerings include the afterschool Plantersville Enrichment Academy and the Plantersville Summer Academy supported by the evidence-based BellXcel curriculum, Literacy Is for Everyone (LIFE), and the Culturally Sustaining STEM Institute.

The Village Group's annual fundraiser, the Tour de Plantersville, explores the only Scenic Byway in Georgetown County offering metric century 62-mile, 25-mile, and 12-mile ride options through the natural setting of Plantersville South Carolina. The ride is perfect for avid cyclists training for their next race or families wanting to share a healthy adventure together.
